GOOD LOVIN’
I love Valentine’s Day…I know, I know, it’s far cooler to be all “commercialised bullcrap” about it, but my husband and I always make an effort to do something…ANYTHING…romantic on 14 February.
So, I’m spreading the love around, with suggestions on some of my favourite loved-up places to eat out around the Capital this V Day…oh, and I apologise in advance for the emphasis on inner south eats… What can I say? It’s my ‘hood and it’s what I know. Would love you all to share the best places to go in your part of The Can…
With a view
Alto – Perched near the top of the Telstra Tower, dining at Alto is a unique Canberra experience. One revolution of the restaurant takes around 85 minutes and once you’re over the slightly disconcerting sensation of movement, you can relax and enjoy some fantastic Mod Oz cuisine.
OnRed – The UFO like structure atop Red Hill is home to amazing and progressive food. Onred has moved away from a traditional menu structure to one more suited to tasting. They say their aim is to offer more interesting flavour combinations and the opportunity for guests to sample a larger variety of dishes. Sounds good to me. We’re actually going here with the in-laws the night after Valentine’s…but I don’t expect much romance
Water’s Edge - Ah, Water’s Edge…I must confess a soft spot here…this is where we got married and I still love everything about the place. The soft, intimate atmosphere, the beautiful lake vista, the inspired menu…everything. If you can afford it, go the special six-course Valentine’s Day degustation for $150…you won’t regret it!
Suburban
Rubicon – Griffith’s Rubicon truly is a no-brainer when it comes to choosing a romantic dining destination. The atmosphere is cosy and plush, the service second-to-none, and the V Day degustation (twelve courses for $120 food only or $180 with premium wines) will be sure to deliver on expectations… Just make sure you pack your spare stomach.
Aubergine – Also at the Griffith shops, Aubergine offers one of the best value fine dining experiences in Canberra. Choose between either a two course ($60) or a three course ($70) prix fixe menu. The atmosphere is intimate and warm and always romantic.
Artespresso- Art is an old fave of ours and, after changing hands a couple of times in 2010, is now back to form. I love that it’s warm and comfortable and that its brasserie style interior doesn’t intimidate. If it’s a balmy night (and I know they’ve been few and far between) ask for a table on one of the four outside terraces so you can enjoy your meal by soft candlelight. They’re offering a seven course degustation menu for $100 (or $140 with matching wines) – sparkling wine, roses and chocolates are complimentary!
The Artisan – A relatively new player on the scene, The Artisan is a well polished performer. Serving inventive and beautifully crafted Modern Australian cuisine, it’s a welcome addition to the Narrabundah shops. Oh, and for a romantic dessert, you can’t go past the Chewy meringue encased in a cellophane wafer with cream chabousse, summer berries and Chambord reduction. Trust me.
Worth the Drive
Grazing – Just 30 minutes drive from Canberra, Grazing is a brilliant reason to visit Gundaroo . Boasting what the SMH calls “sophisticated country dining at it’s best,” they’re offering a special Valentine’s Day dinner – three course dinner, amuse bouche, and a glass of sparkling on arrival for $90 per person.
The Carrington Inn - This quaint Bungendore Inn has long had a reputation as the perfect romantic night away, with many a question popped within its four walls. They have an impressive range of eat & stay packages that are sure to impress your lover.
Le Tres Bon – Can’t afford to whisk your partner away to Paris for Valentine’s Day? Do the next best thing and make your way to Le Tres Bon in Bungendore. Run by the team behind the former Christophe’s in Manuka, Le Tres Bon promises to “take you on a journey through France’s gastronomic regions using the best local and Australian produce.” Bon Appetit!
