Six ways to share the love locally this Valentine’s Day…

Posted on

It’s no surprise that we here at HerCanberra are big lovers of our local shops, you can uncover some truly lovely gems that you wouldn’t normally find elsewhere. So why not buy locally this Valentine’s Day and give your significant other a gift that someone else is unlikely to get?

We also have some amazing local florists that I always strive to use rather than going to those big online corporate chains. To take the hard work out of it – here are my top picks for this Valentine’s Day!

Handsomepretty {Gifts}

handsomepretty

Handsomepretty is located in Lonsdale Street Traders (27 Lonsdale St, Braddon, as the name suggests) towards the very back. They have a plethora of home wares, clothes, shoes, jewellery and artwork. In particular I love their geometric framed prints – a total winner if your partner is a lover of design and colour.

Handmade Canberra {Gifts}

paperaft

No surprises this one made our list, Handmade Canberra’s ever changing displays and rotation of local and quality products makes every visit a surprise as to what you’ll find! In particular they have some super cute cards from Paperaft and environmentally sustainable jewellery from Sinead Buckney which is sure to impress.

Find them at Shop 5, 20 Allara St, City Walk.

Moxom and Whitney {Florist}

moxom&whitney

These ladies are my all around favourites of Canberra, their bouquets are undeniably full of love and creativity, so much better than something you’ll pick up from your local grocer. Moxom and Whitney also have these awesome terrariums which are a cute long-lasting gift that would suit a partner with a green thumb or lover of quirky things.

Skip the red roses and go for something a little more colourful and full of personality! You’ll find these guys in Lonsdale Street Traders (27 Lonsdale St, Braddon), second on the right as you walk in.

X Gallery Bungendore {Gifts}

If you happen to live near Bungendore or pass through you really should stop into X Gallery – a small boutique jewellery shop owned by local Xanthe Gay who creates one of a kind jewellery. This is the perfect gift for your partner who likes the personal handmade stuff that you’re not going to find anyone else wearing. Find them at 32 Gibraltar St, Bungendore.

Canberra Jet Flight Simulator {Fun}

jet

If your partner has ever fancied themself a bit of a Maverick (or even a Goose), then you need to give them a Canberra Jet Flight Simulator experience for Valentine’s Day. The simulator is based on a Boeing 737-800 which is similar to those flown by Qantas. It’s capable of flying at an altitude of 37,000 feet and up to mach 0.8 (about 310 mph). Whatever that means.

You can choose to fly from an almost unbelievable 22,000 airports across the globe, with flights starting from as low as $79, without leaving Fyshwick!

Lu’mon {Food}

heart

Your partner has a sweet tooth? Ditch the boxed chocolates and go for something a little more decadent and special. Lu’mon has a special range of heart-shaped macarons just for Valentine’s Day which will have you salivating as soon as you see them!

You can order via the Lu’mon website – cost are: $15 for 6 macarons (+ $5 delivery in Canberra); $30 for 12  (+ $5 delivery  in Canberra); and $45 for 18. There’s free delivery in Canberra for orders $45 and over.

I would buy my loved one…a macaron of each flavour (maybe 2 int he apple pie flavour). ONe of each flavour just to represent all the different flavours of our relationship -the hobbies we share, the languages we speak, the places we’ve been….. and 2 in the apple pie flavour as that is one of our favourite desserts 🙂

Thanks for the helpful tips Blonde Ink!

Hubby and I love Lu’mon macarons. I would choose the salted caramel macarons for him. They’re his favourite, which is fitting since I think that what makes them (and us!) so great is that the balance of sweet and salty work together perfectly to make a single flavour which is greater than the sum of the individual ingredients alone.

Naaaaawwwwww…. Soppy I know!

A couple of years ago, my partner and I went to Europe. It was an unexpected trip as a result of his brother deciding to get married over there at reasonably sort notice. My partner is not a good traveler, he was worried about the money, totally jet lagged and just generally cranky. Then I took him to Pierre Herme in Paris and gave him a salted caramel macaron. It transformed him and the whole trip from something we had to do as an obligation into an exploration of the wonders of European bakeries and patisseries. As a result salted caramel would be my choice because I feel like that one macaron was responsible for what became the most wonderful few weeks.

I’d give my sweetheart the honeycomb flavour because not only is he sweet as honey, he’s recently become obsessed with beekeeping so bees and honey are a big part of his life right now.

Definitely the s’more flavour, because unfortunately he’ll be in the States over Valentines Day 🙁 But in his absence, I am hosting a big Valentines Day dinner and cocktail party for all my single friends, so perhaps the Red Velvet to spread the love to my deserving beauties!! Oh, and some flowers from Moxom and Whitney to make them feel extra special!

My hubby doesn’t understand the macaron phenomenon but he loves everything citrus-flavoured. I think it’s a great chance to convert him – Lemon please!

Definitely the pistachio flavoured! I attempted to make my man pistachio macaroons a little while ago, and while they tasted quite good, the look didn’t compare to Lu’Mon’s!

Hubby and I share rare delectable moments when we find a new salted caramel product! There’s not enough salted caramel in the world I tells you! We don’t splurge on treats so these babies would definitely see a lot of joy on Valentines Day 😉 X

I would get my boyfriend the salted caramel – he just loves caramel, and loves treats! We work on the same floor at work, and I often come back to my desk to sweet treats and love note post-its which he has left me in secret. Some days we are so opposite, but we somehow compliment each other, just like salt & caramel. Surprise sweet treats would definitely make him smile 🙂

Me for (and let’s face it, this prize would be for me) it would be iced vo-vo.
Hubby on the other hand would choose lemon. Or salted caramel. Actually, I might have trouble getting him to try ANY because all of my past attempts at making macarons have been, well, failures.

We have purchased these amazing macarons from Lu’Mon before and they’re amazing. My husband without a doubt will be after the salted caramel, then the redskin, then the red velvet…. and well , you get the idea. He’s easily pleased

Kimberley says: 5 February, 2014 at 8:33 pm

A mixture!
But at a push I’d say red velvet – the colour is perfect and who doesn’t love that chocolate that isn’t chocolate? Means I can eat more guilt free…ish!

My other half and I have tried to get our hands on a S’more macaron since it became available – we have had no luck yet as every time we have gone to the handmade markets they have sold out! I would definitely want to get him the S’more flavour so he can finally try it!

My boyfriend would love the iced vovo macaron…. it sounds delighfully old fashioned with a flavour that would send us both blissfully back to the simpler times of our childhood.

I love love love the apple pie (so glad they kept it after Christmas) but I would have to to go with salted caramel for my fabulous baby daddy. A delicious classic! (the macaron and my valentine!)

Louise says: 7 February, 2014 at 11:59 am

Well my partner and I would just have to share these little bites of heaven, sharing is caring after all, right!? If I had to choose just one flavour to give – I would choose Salted Caramel… wait no I mean Honeycomb or perhaps maybe S’more. Ok choosing just one is too hard a task. Yum!

Candy says: 7 February, 2014 at 12:08 pm

Sunny says: 7 February, 2014 at 12:19 pm

The Iced Vovo. I’m not a coconut fan, but my valentine is mad for it. This way he’s happily full of delicious treats and I’ll still fit into the inevitable gift of revolting Valentines lingerie. 😉

Sarah Kate says: 7 February, 2014 at 12:52 pm

This is the first valentine’s day I’ve ever had a sweetheart to celebrate with, and luckily we share a sweet tooth too! If I was lucky enough to win, I would delight him with the sweetest surprise… the limited edition strawberry, vanilla and chocolate flavour (mentioned on Lu’mon’s order and payment page)! Thank you 🙂

After trawling through the list of flavours on the website, If given the choice, I would have to give my husband a mixed box, there is no way that I would be able to choose just one with so much variety on offer! Besides, half the fun with things like this is trying all if the different flavours. Nothing like that to make you feel like a small child with a party bag again.
I have been wracking my brain trying to think of something to give my husband this valentines day, I gave birth to our first baby just a few days ago and so I doubt I will get a chance to go to the shops alone to surprise him with something. I usually book us into a fancy restaurant for dinner or make us a 3 course meal however I think this time round it will be a candlelit take away dinner while our beautiful daughter sleeps.
Winning this Valentines day prize would just be the most beautiful thing for this new daddy whose heart has just found the love only a parent can have for their child. When our baby was born, so was a daddy. Over the past few days, I have gone from thinking that I know everything about my husband, to seeing him as a dad and as a parent with me and I realise that this man has so much to offer and that I still have so much to learn about him. He really has blown me away. He is my magic and I would love to give him this gift on our first valentines day as a family.

The flavours all sound delicious so one of every flavour! We also eat with our eyes and they are just so beautiful! Oh yes, My husband loves all flavours!
