The Canberra food scene shows no sign of slowing, with a handful more places opening in the last few months…and a few more to come before winter. Here, in no particular order, are five eateries worth a look.

Farmer’s Daughter {City}

Farmer’s Daughter’s ‘big sister’ in Yarralumla has amassed a loyal following over the two-and-a-half-years, doubling its space since it opened mid 2011. Now it’s making its mark in the city, opening an outlet in the Canberra Centre (just near Jamie’s Italian).

It’s a great little spot for a quick breakfast, lunch or cuppa with tempting pastries (and Lu’mon Macarons) and a range of savoury options. There are also some really cute touches in the fitout, like the tables being made from old Singer sewing machines.

Double Shot {Deakin}

Sound familiar? Yes, the Double Shot name is well known to those who frequent Deakin…but it’s not the same place, not by a long shot. Well known local restauranteur, Omar Muscat, has teamed up with Michael Nager to open a beautifully designed spot with a generous al fresco area which is packing them in.

The menu is interesting, with a range of salads giving diners the option to ‘pick their protein,’ and there’s a definite ‘healthy eating’ bent. Having said that, the range of sweet treats is extensive and beautifully crafted, and the coffee pretty good too. There’s a bit of Gen Y surliness going on with the service, but it could be that I’m just getting old.

Paleo Perfection Espresso Bar {Kingston Foreshore}

If you’re an Old Bus Depot Markets devotee, then Paleo Perfection may be a familiar name. And if you’re a follower of the paleo lifestyle, then you’ll be uber-excited to hear that Misty Taylor has found a permanent home for her popular treats.

This compact but charming spot on the Kingston Foreshore serves a specially blended Fairtrade certified organic coffee and certified organic milk, and everything on their small menu is “made inhouse with love and care and with the highest quality ingredients. Not an ounce of gluten, dairy or processed sugar in sight.”

I have it on good authority that the muffins are to die for.

Mrs Sackville {Kingston Foreshore}

Just a few doors up from Paleo Perfection is Mrs Sackville – a quintessentially English tea room. If you like your industrial chic and fancy pants branding, this is not the place for you – rather, it’s all mismatched furniture, hand written menus and pretty typical English fare. But what you see is what you get, and you’ll be warmly received and looked after by the lovely owner and her East London accent (who, incidentally, isn’t called ‘Mrs Sackville’).

So, if you love a good pot of tea and some eggy bread, without the frills, give it a go. And keep an ear out for their high teas, coming soon.

Double Drummer {Barton}

Double Drummer has been getting rave reviews from Barton office workers and mums with little ones alike – and it’s not hard to see why. With a huge range of sandwiches for those on the run, and a drool-inducing burgers and bistro offering – not to mention some really interesting breakfasts – this place is just what this inner south suburb has been waiting for.

Oh…and they serve cocktails! The only downside? Parking around this area is challenging, to say the least…leave plenty of time if you’re planning to meet someone there.
