HerStory: Ginger Gorman

Posted on

‘Scratch the surface of anyone’s life and you’ll find a story just waiting to be told’.

Whether that’s one of overcoming adversity, or tragedy, or determination, or bravery there are events that shape our lives, that define who we are, but that we simply don’t talk about every day. These are the stories we want to tell.

Ginger Gorman’s name (and voice) will be a familiar to many in Canberra – she’s a multi-award winning social justice journalist who has worked for  ABC Local Radio, ABC Emergency, Triple J, Radio Netherlands Worldwide and Fairfax Community Newspapers. She has also been the recipient of the National Press Club of Australia Excellence in Health Journalism Award for Best Documentary or Documentary Series.

But in 2007, she was about to give up her job to travel the world…a few weeks later, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and her life changed forever.

Ginger shares HerStory here…

A note on watching

These segments unfold naturally and are all about the conversation – not shiny production and bells and whistles. Personally, I like to watch a bit at the start and then just listen while I work, or cook, or check Facebook. Think of them as a visual podcast (btw, let us know if you’d like to access them as a podcast and we’ll see what we can do).

What a delightful and insightful interview .
Thank you Ginger and Amanda for bringing to light the important things in life , sadly I feel so many mothers grapple with unrealistic goals in parenthood …. Hopefully we can all take a leaf out of Gingers book and become more excepting of our selves and others .

I enjoyed interview with Ginger as I too had thyroid cancer back in 2002. I remember being locked up in isolation with neo visitors for 3 days. My husband would knock on the door and drop off my favourite chocolate croissant before leaving me to sleep and watch telly. An experience I will never forget..unfortunately I am now battling ovarian cancer..
