Poachers Pantry gives Canberra brides-to-be a peek at their dream wedding

A talking point for anyone venturing to Poachers Pantry restaurant is often the “unique, distinctive” setting.  With its lush gardens, weatherboard cottage and golden elm tree, it has all the quirks of a charming country property despite being just 35 minutes from the Canberra CBD.

It’s also one of the reasons why so many couples describe it as their “dream” location for their wedding, says the venue’s wedding coordinators Susan Bruce and Katie Crook.

“We host about 50 weddings per year, with Spring and Autumn being our busiest seasons – and we already have bookings into 2016,” says Susan.

“Most couples who come in for the first time will say ‘wow, look at the gardens and look at that elm tree’ – it’s very unique.”

This month, brides and grooms-to be will get the chance to find out exactly what a Poachers wedding looks, tastes and feels like when the venue holds its interactive Open Night on Wednesday 22 October.

Guests will get the opportunity to taste a selection of canapés and regional wines, meet some of Poachers’ recommended wedding suppliers, and talk to the Poachers’ team about package options, available dates and specials.

Susan says couples have two options for their reception: the marquee, which holds up to 200 guests, and the lovingly restored smokehouse café, which can fit up to 100 guests to sit down or 150 people canapé style.

“The marquee is a blank canvas, which you can either make look like a ballroom with chandeliers for that swish 1920 sort of look, or a more rustic, rural  feel, with long tables ” she says.

“The café has a totally different feel of its own, it is a very ‘smart casual, lived in’ space, so there’s an opportunity to style it your way. “

Couples can also opt to have their ceremony at Poachers Pantry, set amongst the scenic gardens.

“The venue is certainly one of the most photogenic with our vineyard and gardens as a backdrop, and because we’re not too far from Canberra, it has that  country feel so many couples are after without the distance,” Susan says.

“We even have couples book ‘destination weddings’ here because they’re after that rural aspect they can’t get from bigger cities such as Sydney or Melbourne.”

But Katie says it’s their emphasis on fresh local, produce along with the meats traditionally cured and smoked on the property which really sets Poachers apart from other venues.

“I think people who have experienced our food and wines know that we’re very into food and they don’t need to be worried about it,” she says.

“We have a real passion for quality regional food, wine and seasonal produce, and that’s what makes us special.”
