Five favourite gluten free friendly places to eat (plus a few more)

It used to be that having a food allergy or intolerance meant that you were severely limited in your choice of restaurant. But not anymore… Canberra goes gluten free eating really well…here’s our pick of gf friendly restaurants and cafes. Let us know yours by leaving a comment!

Ricardo’s Café

This suburban gem is nearly always pumping – and for good reason, the food is amazing and well priced (that’s their Vietnamese Chicken salad: poached chicken, peaches, Asian herbs, cherry tomatoes, coriander with a chilli and lime dressing above). With most of the menu available as gf (including their famous macarons), this is a great casual dining destination. And for families with kids, there’s a playground right outside…win win!

Playground Martini & Tapas Bar

It’s achingly cool and the tapas menu and martinis are winners. The menu clearly provides you with guidance on what is gf – try the playground paella with mixed seafood, chicken, and chorizo (below).

Deeks Bakery and Cafe

Deeks Bakery and Cafe in Dickson and Pearce are entirely 100% Gluten and Grain free – everything in store (bread, breadcrumbs, pasta, muffins, pies, quiche, sandwiches, brownies, caramel slice, biscuits) is safe for coeliacs! Not to mention delicious…

And then there’s

Sweet Bones Bakery at Lonsdale St traders – their vegan, gluten free choc brownie is sinfully good. Bronwen Stead.

Lemongrass Thai in Civic has a full gf menu; and Tosolinis is surprisingly gf friendly with gluten free pasta available on request, and a heap of other options! Sarah Mason

Regal Chinese Restaurant in Belconnen. They can do almost all their dishes gf. Sonia Bowditch

Most restaurants in Canberra are brilliant at gf these days – I think what sets the best apart is that they actually understand coeliac. I hate when I enquire about gf and they ask “are you just following a fad diet, or are you actually coeliac?” When I say coeliac, some items will suddenly not be gf! In saying that, A Bite To EatGryphons (brilliant gf pizza!) and Ellacure are always fab, and understanding. Husband also took me to Courgette Saturday night, and they were really good. Angela Mason

Veganachy is a vegan, gluten and allergy free bakery run by Gabb Carr and is absolutely delicious! She’s at the bus depot markets most weekends. Definitely my favourite speciality goods in Canberra. I would definitely recommend her if you’re looking for baked goods for a function but aren’t sure what special dietary needs might be attending, she can make anything!

My daughter was diagnosed Coeliac in October 2012 (being only 2.5 years old), my son who is 6 has autism with a pretty intense gut issue which has us doing GF & CF (Casein – aka Milk/Dairy). We go to Kid City in Mitchell who, for our children’s birthday parties will do a GFCF party (with food & chips & lollies) that are completely GFCF!

What an amazing place to ensure that they offer dietary needs for our little ones! *much love*

While it is great to see eateries catering for food intolerances they need to be aware that something that is GF also needs to be handled in a completely GF environment in order to avoid cross contamination. Separate saucepans, fry pans, utensils, fryers, sauces etc.

Ottoman Cuisine at Barton is also a great restaurant choice for GF options. The nature of Mediterranean cuisine tends not to use a lot of wheat flour, so there’s a lot of options. The only downside is that for some reason they don’t list GF on their menu, but the wait staff are always very good at knowing what is or isn’t.

I’m a coeliac and have had a terrible time at the Ottoman which has been recommended above. The staff didn’t know what was gf and what wasn’t.

Ramas in Pearce marks the few items on their menu with gluten in them so almost the entire menu is gf! Plus the have fab service!

Crafted3, also do great baked goods that are vegan and GF. They provided some food for my daughter’s birthday party to a guest and the food looked delicious! They are out at the Canberra Region Farmers Market in EPIC.

Thanks for this list, a few more for me to try out.
I like Deeks in Dickson for a light lunch or a grab one of their dairy free coconut/mango muffins. Next door at rainbow cafe they have gluten free options too.
We just had dinner at Trevs in Dickson as they have a range of pizzas with a gluten free base option and it is quite nice.
I agree with someone above, Urban Pantry (Manuka) have a good range plus some great GF desserts. I also love Sweet Bones on Lonsdale street.
Also, for a quickie, Zambreros (mexican chain) has a corn chip and a rice bowl dish that are yummy and fast.

The artisan is amazing! We had our wedding anniversary there in April last year. We ordered the set menu degustation and they simply amended the relevant dishes for me to be gluten free. They were so kind and understanding and the food was just spectacular. I would highly recommend!

My Parea in gungahlin has some really yummy raisin toast and banana bread – it’s the best gf bread I’ve ever had!
