Five favourite gluten free friendly places to eat (plus a few more)

It used to be that having a food allergy or intolerance meant that you were severely limited in your choice of restaurant. But not anymore… Canberra goes gluten free eating really well…here’s our pick of gf friendly restaurants and cafes. Let us know yours by leaving a comment!
Ricardo’s Café
This suburban gem is nearly always pumping – and for good reason, the food is amazing and well priced (that’s their Vietnamese Chicken salad: poached chicken, peaches, Asian herbs, cherry tomatoes, coriander with a chilli and lime dressing above). With most of the menu available as gf (including their famous macarons), this is a great casual dining destination. And for families with kids, there’s a playground right outside…win win!
Playground Martini & Tapas Bar
It’s achingly cool and the tapas menu and martinis are winners. The menu clearly provides you with guidance on what is gf – try the playground paella with mixed seafood, chicken, and chorizo (below).
Deeks Bakery and Cafe
Deeks Bakery and Cafe in Dickson and Pearce are entirely 100% Gluten and Grain free – everything in store (bread, breadcrumbs, pasta, muffins, pies, quiche, sandwiches, brownies, caramel slice, biscuits) is safe for coeliacs! Not to mention delicious…
And then there’s
Sweet Bones Bakery at Lonsdale St traders – their vegan, gluten free choc brownie is sinfully good. Bronwen Stead.
Lemongrass Thai in Civic has a full gf menu; and Tosolinis is surprisingly gf friendly with gluten free pasta available on request, and a heap of other options! Sarah Mason
Regal Chinese Restaurant in Belconnen. They can do almost all their dishes gf. Sonia Bowditch
Most restaurants in Canberra are brilliant at gf these days – I think what sets the best apart is that they actually understand coeliac. I hate when I enquire about gf and they ask “are you just following a fad diet, or are you actually coeliac?” When I say coeliac, some items will suddenly not be gf! In saying that, A Bite To Eat, Gryphons (brilliant gf pizza!) and Ellacure are always fab, and understanding. Husband also took me to Courgette Saturday night, and they were really good. Angela Mason
